The Weet-Bix SurfGroms Program Launches Into A New Season this 2016/17


Kids across the country will be raring to get stuck into learning the art of surfing after the Weet-Bix SurfGroms officially launched for the 2016/17 season today.

Since Weet-Bix SurfGroms was launched in October 2011, more than 50,000 Australian children have experienced the thrill of surfing for the first time, and registrations for the latest programs are now open, just in time for summer.

Weet-Bix SurfGroms offers youngsters aged 5-12 years old an opportunity to learn to surf while developing strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills at a very influential period in their lives, that they will enjoy and embrace for a lifetime.

Weet-Bix SurfGroms is backed by major support sponsors Quiksilver and Roxy along with the Australian Sports Commission, Toyota, Nikon, Wahu and Banana Boat.

The program continues to strengthen moving into the new season, with two new support sponsors in what promises to be an exciting season.  Woolworths comes on board as a support sponsor of the Weet-Bix SurfGroms program along with Global Surf Industries (GSI).

“We are launching the new season of Weet-Bix SurfGroms with a great sense of pride and excitement,” said Surfing Australia General Manager Sport Development and High Performance Chris Symington.

“This year we aim to start over 12,000 Weet-Bix SurfGroms on their lifelong surfing journey. This fantastic junior participation program continues to act as the foundation of our sport development pathway and truly embodies our purpose of creating healthier and happier Australians through surfing.”

Weet-Bix SurfGroms programs are available through the Surfing Australia Surf Schools Network with more than 80 delivery centres around the country. Parents can register their children through the website – – which will provide contact details for their closest delivery centre.

Weet-Bix SurfGroms will also be offering youngsters the opportunity to learn how to Stand-up Paddleboard (SUP). Surfing Australia has developed this program as part of the Weet-Bix SurfGroms experience to teach kids the skills they need to SUP safely and confidently throughout their lifetime.

Last year the Australian Sports Commission launched a major new sporting initiative called Sporting Schools – a federal Government initiative to get more primary school kids active in sport around the country – which will include the delivery of Weet-Bix SurfGroms before; during; or after school.

Every child signing up will receive a great Quiksilver or Roxy backpack bursting with surfing merchandise including a rash-vest, sun-hat, Weet-Bix GO, Woolworths Healthy Lunch Boxes booklet, Toyota wax comb, Nikon sticker and Banana Boat SunComfort sunscreen.
