West Oz Champions Shine At Final Wahu Surfer Groms Comps Presented By Woolworths At Trigg

Final Wahu Surfer Grom Comp


TRIGG BEACH, WA/AUS (Sunday 29th January 2017), The final leg of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths concluded today at Trigg Point, with seven champions battling testing onshore conditions on their way victory.


The specialty ‘grommets only’ event places a heavy emphasis on competitors and families having fun, as a record number of groms from across WA attended the ninth stop of the Australia wide series.

Jay Robinson (Dunsborough) and Coral Durant (Red Bluff) claimed top honours in the Under-14 Boys and Girls divisions, earning an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC).

Robinson posted the biggest result of his young career thus far, scoring a combined total of 10.66 (from a possible 20) in a tightly fought out 20-minute final. Robinson secured a heat high score of 6.83 (from a possible 10) and was able to fend off Dexter Payenberg (Palmyra), James Bennett (Cottesloe) and Danny Benedetti (Margaret River) until the siren sounded.


“I’m so stoked this has to best one of the best prizes you could ever receive,” said Robinson “The HPC will be such an amazing opportunity and this weekend has been so much fun.”


Durant confirmed she’s a star on the rise with a dominant performance in the Under-14 Girls final. Scoring a combined total of 14.83 (from a possible 20), Durant won comfortably ahead of Taiana Duncan (Kalbarri), Denva Halden (Falcon) and Lilli Cox (Margaret River).


“This is the first time I’ve ever competed in the Wahu comp and to win a trip to the HPC is really incredible,” said Durant. “It’s been a big couple of weeks for me and I couldn’t ask for a better start to the year than this.”


Jake Hagan (Geraldton) displayed some solid skills in tough conditions to claim a gutsy win ahead a group of exciting young surfers. All four finalists battled the afternoon waves with great gusto, but it was Hagan who catapulted himself into first place with some critical backhand surfing.

Hagan finished ahead of a determined Jack Mickle (Trigg) in second, Brock Launders (Margaret River) in third and Toby Jenkins (Falcon) in fourth.


“It’s been a great weekend and I just can’t wait to get back to school to tell all my mates,” said Hagan.


In other results, 9 year old Ruby Berry (Margaret River) was unstoppable on her way to a double victory in the Under 12 and Under 10 Girls divisions. Berry was too good for an emerging bunch of talented young girls from across the state and will be one to watch into the future.


“Thank you everybody for a great weekend, this is my favourite event by far and I’m so happy to have won in two divisions,” said Berry.


The Peel region seems to be a hot spot for surfing talent at the moment, with Maverick Wilson (Mandurah) dominating the exciting Under 10 Boys final. While Ace Flynn (Mandurah) proved to be too strong Under-8 parent assist final.

Surfing WA high performance coach Mark Clift was complementary of the of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps and the atmosphere on offer for the next generation of West Australian surfers.


“This is such a great event, truly unique and a bunch of fun for the little ones,” said Clift.


Brock Launders (Margaret River) and Claire Levey (Greenwood) were recognised as the best and fairest male and female surfers from each event, claiming the Woolworths Fresh Wave Awards. The recipients displayed a high degree of sportsmanship as well as exhibiting future surfing potential, receiving a $250 Woolworths voucher each.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps presented by Woolworths have helped to launch the careers of many of Australia’s most promising junior surfers with more than 800 children set to take part in the 2016/17 event series.

Previous champions include Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox, Luke Hynd, Eli Steele, Kai Hing, Chris Zaffis, Quinn Bruce, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols, Holly Wawn and Laura Poncini.
